About the University

Assam Women’s University (AWU) is a public state university located in Jorhat, Assam, established in 2013 through the Assam Women’s University Act (Act XXII of 2013). It is the first women’s university in Assam and is empowered by the UGC under Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956, to award degrees through its own departments.

The university is dedicated to:

  • Providing postgraduate education and opportunities for women in fields like applied sciences, arts, commerce, management, and social sciences.
  • Promoting research and development with a strong focus on women’s issues and perspectives.
  • Designing education programs responsive to socio-economic needs and ensuring specialization and diversity.

Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology at Assam Women’s University is the first in the region to offer an undergraduate degree in psychology, recognizing the global advancements in the field and the importance of building a strong foundational base. The undergraduate programme is designed to introduce students to core psychological concepts, research methodology, experimentation, and psychological testing, preparing them for specialized postgraduate studies.

At the master’s level, the programme offers specializations such as Social & Industrial Psychology, Evolutionary & Developmental Psychology, Personality & Clinical Psychology, and Education & Counselling Psychology. The curriculum emphasizes both Western and Indian theoretical schools, fostering critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and cultural sensitivity.

Additionally, students are required to complete a mandatory internship during their Master’s programme to gain practical experience. The department is committed to cultivating an academic environment that balances rigorous scientific training with awareness of social, cultural, and economic influences on human behavior.
