About the University
The University of Jammu, often simply called Jammu University, is a prominent public university located in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Established in 1969 through an act of the state legislature, it emerged from the bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir. The university holds an ‘A++’ grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and was ranked 63rd among universities by NIRF in 2023.
The University of Jammu operates on two main campuses: the Main Campus (New Campus) at Bahu Wali Rakh, Jammu, and the Old Campus on Canal Road, Jammu. The Main Campus, spanning approximately 118.78 acres, is the primary hub, housing all academic departments, the Central Library (Dhanvantri Library), an auditorium, canteens, cafeterias, a bookshop, bank, post office, and a guest house. It also features a comprehensive sports complex and grounds, botanical and cactus gardens, a medical center, and residential facilities for both staff and students. In contrast, the Old Campus, covering about 10.5 acres, primarily serves as residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff and includes a boys’ hostel. To broaden access to higher education in remote areas, the University has also established several offsite campuses, including Bhaderwah, Kathua, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramnagar, Reasi, and Udhampur.
Department of psychology
The Department of Psychology at the University of Jammu, Jammu, was established in December 2001 under the Faculty of Behavioral Sciences. It holds the distinction of being the first Post Graduate Department of Psychology in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Currently operating under the Faculty of Social Sciences, the department functions as an interdisciplinary center for higher learning and academic excellence.
The Department offers optional courses at the postgraduate level in frontline research areas such as Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology, and Organizational Behavior, in addition to a Ph.D. program in Psychology. Its teaching methodologies are innovative and unique, focusing on providing quality instruction, practical experience, and a distinctive opportunity for students to develop the vision, knowledge, initiative, and critical thinking skills essential for professional challenges and community needs.

1)Duration: 3 years For BA psychology
Duration: 4 years for BA (hons with research )in psychology
2)Eligibility: Candidates must have passed the 10+2 Examination or equivalent from a recognized board. Preference may be given to candidates with Psychology as a subject at the 10+2 level plus Candidates must have taken the CUET UG examination with the subject combination of General Test and Psychology

MA in psychology
1) Duration: 2 years (full-time).
2) Eligibility: A candidate seeking admission must have passed or appeared in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree examination with Psychology as one of the core courses/subjects or with honours in Psychology from a recognized university.
3) For the candidates (except SC/ST categories), the minimum eligibility is 50% marks aggregate or equivalent grade in the qualifying examination as per the Program-Specific Eligibility. In case of SC/ST the minimum eligibility is 45% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade in the qualifying examination as per the Program-Specific Eligibility.
A candidate may still be considered for admission. This applies even if they are not a permanent resident/domicile of the territorial jurisdiction of the University of Jammu. This is possible notwithstanding anything contained in the Statutes. The candidate must have passed the qualifying examination. Their minimum score should be 60% marks. They must be from a University other than the University of Jammu. There is a condition. The seats in this category shall not exceed 30% of the total seats available in a programme of study.
Admission procedure
1. First Preference: Candidates who have appeared for CUET-PG 2025 (scored minimum 40 marks )and meet the program-specific eligibility criteria.
2. Second Preference: Candidates are evaluated on a composite merit. This includes 75% of academic merit and 25% of CUET-2025 score. This is provided they meet the program-specific eligibility.
3. Third Preference: Candidates who have appeared for CUET-PG 2025. They must have earned at least 24 credits in Psychology as a minor subject in their qualifying examination.
Note: The second and third preferences are considered only if seats remain vacant after exhausting the first preference list.

Doctoral (Ph.D.) Level: Ph.D. in Psychology
1)Duration -3 to 6 year
2)Eligibility Criteria:
Master’s Degree: Candidates typically need a Master’s Degree in Psychology. They must have at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade. A relaxation of 5% (to 50%) is usually provided for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/PWD/EWS candidates.
Integrated Bachelor’s-Master’s: Candidates with a 1-year/Semesters Master’s degree after a 4-year/Semesters Bachelor’s degree (with 75% marks) are also eligible. Those with a 2-year/4-semester Master’s degree after a 3-year Bachelor’s degree (with 55% marks) are also eligible.
M.Phil.: Candidates who have completed an M.Phil. program with at least 55% marks (or 50% for reserved categories) are eligible.
National Level Tests: Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET, including JRF, UGC-CSIR-NET, including JRF, or GATE and similar national level tests, are often exempted from the entrance test. SET/SLET qualifiers are also exempted. They can be considered for admission based on an interview and their test scores.

3)Admission Procedure:
Application: Online application through the university website.
3.1 Entrance Test: Non-exempted candidates must appear for an entrance test. The test typically comprises two components:
Research Aptitude Component/Methodology (50 marks)
Academic Component (50 marks, based on the Post-Graduate Syllabus of the University of Jammu)
3.2 Interview/Viva Voce: Shortlisted candidates (both exempted and non-exempted) undergo an interview to assess their research aptitude and interest.
3.4 Selection: The final selection is based on combined merit. It consists of 70% for the written test and 30% for the interview for non-exempted categories.
