About the university
Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya (earlier known as the University of Saugor) was established in 1946 by Dr. Sir Hari Singh Gour. He was a well-known lawyer, educationist, and social reformer who used his own life savings to establish the university. This makes it one of the few universities in India founded by one person’s generous efforts. The University is located just 5 km east of Sagar city in Madhya Pradesh, spread across 1312.89 acres on the scenic Pathariya hills, part of the Vindhya Range. The campus is surrounded by approximately 100 acres of lush green forest. It offers a breathtaking natural setting. It also plays an active role in preserving the local ecosystem and biodiversity. It is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque university campuses in India.
- It was originally a state university. It was designated as a Central University on January 15, 2009 under the Central Universities Act, 2009.
- The President of India now Droupadi Murmu is the official Visitor of the university.
- It holds a prestigious NAAC A+ grade for academic excellence.
- The NIRF ranking for DHSGSU in 2024 placed it within the 101-150 range.
- In 2024, DHSGSU was ranked #189 in the QS World University Rankings for Southern Asia.

Department of Psychology
The Department of Psychology was established in 1963. It is a vital part of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences. The department has long been a center of excellence in Central India. With the ever-changing challenges of society and the world, the relevance of psychology has grown tremendously. Recognizing this, the department offers a comprehensive postgraduate program designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The curriculum strikes a careful balance between foundational concepts and hands-on application, preparing students to meet the demands of the field with confidence and competence.

Admission Process
Admission to postgraduate programs at Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya (DHSGSU) is based on the CUET-PG entrance exam. Candidates must ensure they meet the eligibility criteria before applying as merely appearing for CUET-PG does not guarantee admission. The university prepares a merit list based on CUET-PG scores which is then used to shortlist candidates followed by an offline counselling session where physical presence of the shortlisted candidates is mandatory.
