A key part of the postgraduate program is the one-month hospital internship during the summer break. During this period, students provide counselling to patients dealing with a variety of concerns, including mental health disorders, chronic illnesses like cancer and heart disease, trauma, abuse, childhood learning difficulties, geriatric issues, and lifestyle-related problems. These internships not only strengthen clinical skills but often lead to direct employment offers. Graduates find placements in hospitals, counseling centers, schools, colleges, industries, IT companies, and some even establish their own counseling practices.
Highlights and Unique Features
One of the most notable contributions of the department is the development of Positive Therapy, a unique intervention model created by former professor Dr. Hemalatha Natesan. This therapy combines Eastern techniques of Yoga with Western Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and has shown remarkable effectiveness in addressing a wide spectrum of psychological issues. The department continues to integrate such innovative approaches into its curriculum and research work. Regular workshops, mental health awareness programs, and seminars are conducted to promote community engagement and professional development. With a strong foundation in ethics, research, and applied practice, the department remains a pioneer in preparing future psychologists to meet contemporary mental health needs.
