If you’re a psychology student with a passion for exploring the human mind and making a meaningful academic impact, the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) might just be the stepping stone you need. With psychology now officially part of the GATE exam, students can unlock opportunities at top-tier institutions like the IITs, NITs, and IISc, paving the way for advanced study, research, and even government fellowships.

You’re in the right place. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know—exam pattern, syllabus, preparation tips, and more—to help you get started on this exciting academic journey.

GATE is a national exam that assesses knowledge in Engineering, Science, Arts, and Psychology at the undergraduate level. It is held annually for those aiming for master’s or PhD programs or jobs in the public sector. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, along with seven IITs conducts the exam, with IIT Guwahati taking the lead in 2026 and IIT Roorkee having led last year.

Let’s hear the journey of one of our top students — now a PhD scholar — who began with a non-Psychology background.

A good GATE score can open up some amazing doors for you. Here are a couple of major reasons to get excited:

  • Master’s/Doctoral Programs: GATE scores are the golden ticket to coveted M.A./M.Sc. or Ph.D. programs in psychology at renowned Indian institutes. Hello, advanced studies!
  • Financial Assistance: Scholarships and financial aid are often linked to GATE scores, which more often that not is a relief.
  • Public Sector Jobs: Several public sector companies recruit based on GATE scores, offering a stable and rewarding career path.
  • Research Opportunities: GATE can pave the way for research positions in esteemed institutions such as DRDO, allowing you to contribute to the field.

The great news is that the eligibility criteria are pretty straightforward. You can apply for GATE 2026 if you:

  • Are currently in your third year or higher of an undergraduate program.
  • Have already completed your bachelor’s degree in Psychology or another related field from a government-approved institution. This applies to international students, too! As long as you’re in your third year or have a completed bachelor’s degree (of at least three years), you’re all set.

The GATE exam is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) that lasts for three hours. All the questions are in English. Here’s a quick look at the format:

  • You’ll see a mix of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple-Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Types (NATs).
  • You’ll get either 1 or 2 marks for a correct answer. But watch out for negative marking on the MCQs!
    • For a 1-mark MCQ, a wrong answer will cost you ⅓ of a mark.
    • For a 2-mark MCQ, a wrong answer will cost you ⅔ of a mark.
  • No negative marking for MSQs or NATs—so don’t be afraid to take a guess!
  • The exam is split into three main parts:
    • General Aptitude
    • Reasoning and Comprehension
    • Psychology
