Why Should You, a Psychology Student, Care About the GATE Score?

Eligibility for GATE 2026
The great news is that the eligibility criteria are pretty straightforward. You can apply for GATE 2026 if you:
- Are currently in your third year or higher of an undergraduate program.
- Have already completed your bachelor’s degree in Psychology or another related field from a government-approved institution. This applies to international students, too! As long as you’re in your third year or have a completed bachelor’s degree (of at least three years), you’re all set.
What’s the Exam Like?
The GATE exam is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) that lasts for three hours. All the questions are in English. Here’s a quick look at the format:
- You’ll see a mix of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple-Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Types (NATs).
- You’ll get either 1 or 2 marks for a correct answer. But watch out for negative marking on the MCQs!
- For a 1-mark MCQ, a wrong answer will cost you ⅓ of a mark.
- For a 2-mark MCQ, a wrong answer will cost you ⅔ of a mark.
- No negative marking for MSQs or NATs—so don’t be afraid to take a guess!
- The exam is split into three main parts:
