Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU), formerly Ranchi College, is one of Jharkhand’s oldest public universities, established in 1926. Originally established as a government school, the institution underwent significant transformation over the decades, culminating in its elevation to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University in 2018. Today it serves about 16,000 students on a lush, central Ranchi campus. The university offers a wide range of traditional and vocational courses (29 undergraduate/postgraduate programs and additional certificate/diploma courses) to meet diverse career aspirations. DSPMU emphasizes high academic standards, intellectual growth, incisive critical thinking, and boundless creativity.

Department of Psychology

The M.A. in Psychology course is offered by the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Science, DSPMU. The program is designed to provide in-depth knowledge in various subfields of psychology, including clinical, counseling, and cognitive psychology. Despite having a small faculty, the department is committed to fostering a supportive and intellectually stimulating learning atmosphere.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi (M.P.), is a comprehensive six-semester undergraduate program that blends theoretical knowledge with practical application. The curriculum covers key areas of psychology such as biopsychology, human development, social behavior, statistics, abnormal psychology, psychological measurement, and counseling psychology. Students gain exposure to contemporary theories, research methodologies, and applied practices through lectures, practical sessions, and fieldwork. A strong emphasis is placed on hands-on learning, including psychological testing, assessment, and data interpretation. Additionally, in the first year, students are offered Ability Enhancement Courses to strengthen their foundational skills and broaden their academic and professional capabilities.

  • Eligibility for Master of Arts in Psychology
  • (i) Candidates who have completed full time B.A./B.Sc. Honors in Psychology, in regular mode; Candidates who have completed full time B.A./B.Sc. General – with a minimum of three papers in Psychology, in regular mode.
  • (ii) Candidates who have completed any Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University.
