Can children think before they learn to speak? Does learning a new language change the way we understand the world? And why do young children sometimes talk to themselves while solving a problem?

Language and thought are two closely connected aspects of cognitive development. Children use language not only to communicate with others but also to organise their ideas, express emotions, solve problems, and regulate their behaviour. At the same time, their developing thinking abilities influence how they understand and use language.

What is Language?

Language is a system of symbols, words, sounds, and rules used for communication and expression.

It allows children to:

  • Communicate needs and feelings
  • Share ideas
  • Ask questions
  • Understand others
  • Develop concepts
  • Participate in social interactions
  • Express and organise thoughts

Language can be spoken, written, or expressed through other symbolic systems.

What is Thought?

Thought refers to the mental processes through which individuals represent, organise, interpret, and manipulate information.

It includes:

  • Reasoning
  • Problem-solving
  • Planning
  • Decision-making
  • Imagination
  • Concept formation
  • Memory
  • Reflection

Example

When a child thinks, “If I put the larger block at the bottom, the tower will not fall,” the child is using reasoning and prediction.

Relationship Between Language and Thought

Language and thought influence each other throughout development.

Language provides children with symbols and words through which they can represent ideas, while thinking helps children understand and use those words meaningfully.

For example, a young child may understand the concept of “more” before being able to use the word correctly. With language development, the child can communicate the concept more effectively.

Thus, language is not merely a communication tool; it can also become a tool for thinking.

Stages of Language Development

Language develops gradually from simple sounds and gestures to complex sentences and meaningful communication. The exact age may vary from child to child, but the general sequence remains relatively similar.

Piaget’s Perspective on Language and Thought

Jean Piaget believed that children actively construct knowledge through interaction with their environment.

According to Piaget, cognitive development plays an important role in language development. As children’s thinking becomes more organised and sophisticated, their language also develops.

Egocentric Speech

Piaget described young children’s speech as sometimes egocentric. Children may talk aloud without fully considering another person’s perspective.

Example

A child playing with blocks may continuously describe what they are doing without checking whether another person understands or is interested.

Piaget connected this behaviour with the child’s developing ability to understand perspectives different from their own.


Vygotsky’s Perspective on Language and Thought

Lev Vygotsky gave language a central role in cognitive development.

According to Vygotsky, language initially develops as a means of social communication. Through interaction with parents, teachers, peers, and other knowledgeable people, children gradually internalise language and use it to guide their own thinking and behaviour.

His important concepts include:

Language, Culture and Learning

Language is closely connected with culture. Children learn language through interactions with family, community, school, and society.

Through language, children also learn:

  • Cultural values
  • Social rules
  • Traditions
  • Ways of communicating
  • Social expectations

Vygotsky therefore viewed learning and development within a social and cultural context.


Multilingualism and Learning

Children may grow up using two or more languages. Being multilingual should not be considered a sign of low intelligence or poor cognitive ability.

Teachers can support multilingual learners by:

  • Using visual aids.
  • Connecting new words with familiar experiences.
  • Encouraging peer interaction.
  • Allowing students to discuss ideas using familiar languages when appropriate.
  • Providing opportunities to practise the language of instruction.
  • Focusing on understanding rather than penalising every language error.

Example

A child understands a mathematics concept but struggles to explain it in the classroom language. The teacher can first check the child’s conceptual understanding and then support the development of appropriate vocabulary.


Role of Language in Learning

Language is central to classroom learning because students use it to:

  • Understand instructions
  • Ask questions
  • Explain answers
  • Participate in discussions
  • Read textbooks
  • Write responses
  • Collaborate with peers
  • Develop concepts

Therefore, teachers should treat language development as an important part of learning across all subjects.

Language development progresses from babbling and single words to two-word combinations, telegraphic speech, and complex language, while also shaping how children communicate and organise their thoughts.

A supportive classroom should encourage children to speak, question, discuss, explain, and think aloud, thereby strengthening both language and learning.
