Have you noticed how your body reacts differently when you’re scared compared to when you’re calm? Imagine a dog suddenly barking at you—your heart starts pounding, your palms get sweaty, and your breathing turns fast. But later, when you’re back home on the sofa, your heartbeat slows down, your breathing steadies, and digestion quietly resumes.

Both reactions come from two different “gears” of your body’s autonomic nervous system, always balancing each other. Can you guess which one prepares you for action and which one helps you relax?

Before learning about sympathetic and non-sympathetic systems, it’s important to first understand their position in the nervous system.

The nervous system is like the electrical wiring of our body. It helps us sense, think, move, and even control automatic processes like breathing and heartbeat.

Two Main Divisions: CNS and PNS
  • Central Nervous System (CNS): Made up of the brain and spinal cord, it acts as the command centre, processing information and making decisions.
  • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): All the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. It connects the CNS to the rest of the body.
Inside the PNS – Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)

The PNS has two parts:

  • Somatic Nervous System (SNS): controls voluntary movements (like raising your hand).
  • Autonomic Nervous System (ANS): controls involuntary functions (heartbeat, digestion, pupil size), the things we don’t have to think about.

The ANS itself has two opposite “gears”:

  • One that speeds up the body in emergencies.
  • One that slows it down and restores balance.
Sympathetic vs Parasympathetic – The Two Gears

Imagine being chased by a barking dog—your heart races, palms sweat, and breathing becomes faster. Later, when you’re safe on the sofa, your heartbeat slows, breathing steadies, and digestion restarts.

  • The first reaction comes from the Sympathetic Nervous System (fight or flight).
  • The second reaction comes from the Parasympathetic Nervous System (rest and digest).

Together, they keep your body in balance, like an accelerator and a brake in the same car.

  1. Sympathetic nervous system – It is often called the “fight or flight” system. It becomes active in stressful or emergency situations, preparing the body for quick action. When it takes charge, your heart rate and blood pressure rise, pupils widen to improve vision, digestion slows down, and adrenaline is released to provide extra energy. It works like the accelerator pedal of a car, pushing the body to act.
    • Activated in stress, fear, or emergencies.

  2. Parasympathetic nervous system– It is known as the “rest and digest” system. It becomes active when the body is safe and relaxed. In this state, the heartbeat slows, breathing becomes steady, pupils contract, and digestion becomes active again to restore energy. It works like the brake pedal of a car, helping the body to calm down and recover.
    • Activated during rest, safety, and recovery.
    • Slows heart rate & breathing.

    • Promotes relaxation and sleep.
