What is UGC NET Psychology ?
UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) is a national-level examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is held twice a year (June & December) in computer-based mode (CBT).
For Psychology students, this exam assesses your understanding of core psychological concepts, theories, and applications. After qualifying, you become eligible for roles like Assistant Professor, can receive the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) with a monthly stipend, or get direct admission into PhD programs without a separate entrance exam.
It is one of the most important exams for building a career in academics, research, and higher education in Psychology.
Eligibility Criteria
- UGC NET 2026 eligibility can be fulfilled either through a Master’s degree (55% for General, 50% for reserved categories) or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree (75% General, 70% reserved).
- Final-year or result-awaited candidates are also allowed to apply, but their admission remains provisional.
- Candidates must complete their qualifying degree within the given time limit, otherwise their eligibility will be cancelled.
- JRF Age Limit: Under 30 years
- Assistant Professor: No age limit
Important : Candidates with a 4-year Bachelor’s degree can apply for UGC NET without a Master’s, with 75% marks (General) and 70% (Reserved).
They are eligible only for JRF and PhD, not for Assistant Professor.
Final-year UG students can also apply, but their admission will be provisional.

Certificate Validity
- UGC NET Certificate for Assistant Professor is valid for a lifetime.
- JRF validity is 3 years from the award letter; fellowship starts from the NET result (in case Ph.D. has already begun) or Ph.D. joining date, whichever is later.
- Category 3 (Admission to Ph.D.) scores/qualification is valid for 1 year from the result declaration.
- For admission to PHD programs (Score Weightage : 70% based on Net marks & 30% based on University/HEI interview or Viva.)

Important Points (UGC NET 2026)
- Exam is conducted in online (CBT) mode
- No break between both papers
- Paper available in English & Hindi (except language subjects)
- Medium once selected cannot be changed
- In case of discrepancy, English version is final
- Each question carries 2 marks (+2 for correct, 0 for wrong – no negative marking)
- Unattempted questions get 0 marks

Candidates should ideally select the same subject as their Post-Graduation, or a closely related one if their exact subject is not available.

Application Fee: General: ₹1150 | EWS/OBC-NCL: ₹600 | SC/ST/PwD/Third Gender: ₹325; payment can be made via UPI, debit/credit card, or net banking, and the fee is non-refundable with additional GST/processing charges applicable.
Admit Card & Examination
- Admit card will be released on the official NTA website before the exam
- Carry: printed admit card + valid photo ID + passport-size photo

- Filling multiple application forms (only one allowed)
- Uploading unclear photo or incorrect signature
- Applying at the last moment (website issues possible)
- Entering wrong category or subject code
- Not checking confirmation page or payment status
