According to Elizabeth B. Hurlock,
“Development is a progressive series of orderly and coherent changes that lead an individual toward maturity.”
According to James Drever,
“Development is the progressive change in an organism from birth until death.”
In simple words, development is the continuous process through which a person becomes physically stronger, mentally sharper, emotionally balanced, socially responsible, and morally mature.

Many students confuse growth with development. Although related, they are not identical.

Simply put, development provides the readiness to learn, while learning enhances further development. Without appropriate developmental maturity, learning becomes difficult, and without meaningful learning experiences, development may not reach its full potential.

Example: A child cannot write neatly until the muscles of the fingers and hands are sufficiently developed.
Cognitive Development
The development of thinking, reasoning, memory, and attention helps children understand concepts, solve problems, and make logical decisions.
Example: A child learns mathematical operations more effectively once they develop logical thinking abilities.
Language Development
Language development enables children to understand instructions, communicate ideas, and participate in classroom discussions.
Emotional Development
Emotionally mature children can manage stress, concentrate better, and work cooperatively with others.
How Learning Influences Development
Learning is equally important because it accelerates development in various domains.
Learning helps children:

Theories Explaining the Relationship
Jean Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory
Jean Piaget believed that children actively construct knowledge through interaction with their environment. According to him, learning becomes meaningful only when it matches the child’s stage of cognitive development.
Key Idea: Development comes before learning.
Classroom Example: Teaching algebra to a five-year-old is ineffective because the child has not yet reached the required stage of cognitive development.
Lev Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory
Lev Vygotsky emphasized that learning occurs through social interaction. He introduced the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which refers to tasks a child cannot perform independently but can accomplish with guidance from a teacher or a more knowledgeable peer.
Key Idea: Learning promotes development.
Classroom Example: A teacher demonstrates how to solve a problem, gradually reducing support as the child becomes independent. This process is known as scaffolding.
Jerome Bruner’s Theory
Jerome Bruner believed that any subject can be taught effectively if it is presented according to the learner’s developmental level. He encouraged discovery learning and active participation.
Key Idea: Teaching should match the learner’s developmental readiness while encouraging exploration.

Example 3: Classroom Participation
A shy child may initially hesitate to answer questions. Through encouragement, group activities, and positive reinforcement, the child gradually becomes more confident, demonstrating both emotional development and learning.

An effective teacher understands that children do not learn in the same way or at the same pace.
Teachers who understand development can:
