If you’re planning to do your Postgraduate (PG) studies in Psychology from a top university in India, the Common University Entrance Test for Postgraduate (CUET PG) is your golden ticket. From 2022 onwards, the Government of India made CUET PG the standard entrance test for admission to PG courses in many Central, State and Private Universities. Here’s everything you need to know about CUET PG Psychology – from the exam pattern to the syllabus – in a simple and clear way.

About the Exam

The CUET PG Psychology exam is designed to test your knowledge of undergraduate-level Psychology concepts.

  • It is the only entrance exam accepted by many reputed universities like University of Delhi, Banaras Hindu University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and others for their PG Psychology courses.
  • Both M.A. and M.Sc. programs in Psychology accept CUET PG scores.
  • You can apply even if you are in your final year of graduation—you just need to show proof of passing before admission.

The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
NTA is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It manages everything – from releasing notifications and conducting the exam to declaring results.

    For syllabus
Note: Always download the latest syllabus PDF from the NTA CUET PG official website before starting your preparation, as it can change slightly every year.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in Psychology or related subjects from a recognized university (final year students can also apply).
  • Age Limit: None (but some universities may have their own age or percentage requirements).
Important Things to Keep in Mind
  • Apply online through the NTA CUET PG portal only – https://exams.nta.ac.in/CUET-PG/syllabus.html.
  • Use the correct subject code HUQP20 for Psychology when filling out the form.
  • Keep track of important dates – application start, last date to apply, admit card release, exam date and result.
  • Check individual university websites for their own counseling process and cutoff marks.

Preparation Strategies that Work

  • Understand the Full Syllabus: Always download the latest official syllabus (HUQP20) directly from the NTA’s website. Take time to review all subtopics to avoid surprises.
  • Smart Study Planning: Break down the syllabus into smaller units (like cognitive psychology, biopsychology, social psychology, etc.) and make a realistic timetable. Divide study sessions into daily, weekly and monthly goals for systematic progress.
  • Resource Selection: Use entrance-oriented materials. Quality is better than quantity—NCERT Class 11 and 12 books are fundamental but reference books by Ciccarelli or Baron can provide deeper insights. Prefer expert-suggested or university-recommended resources over random selections.
  • Consistent Practice: Previous years’ question papers, mock tests, and sample papers are crucial. They not only familiarize you with the pattern but also improve your speed and accuracy. Time-bound practice is especially useful since the test is conducted online with strict time limits.
  • Targeted Revision: Focus more on high-weightage topics like Abnormal Psychology, Personality, Statistics and Psychological Testing. Make concise notes for last-minute revision and regularly self-test on these areas.
