The study of personality has ancient roots. Hippocrates and later Galen linked body fluids to temperaments: sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic. In the early 20th century, thinkers like Carl Jung and William Sheldon explored personality typologies based on psychological and physical patterns. Building on these early ideas, Gordon Allport shifted the focus from broad “types” to measurable individual traits, laying the foundation for modern trait psychology.
Trait Theories and Personality Measurement
As psychology matured, researchers wanted to move beyond abstract theories and study personality in measurable, scientific ways. This led to the trait approach, the idea that personality can be understood through stable characteristics that influence how people think, feel, and behave.
Instead of focusing on hidden motives or unconscious drives, trait theorists asked:
“What consistent patterns define a person’s personality?”
Here’s how some of the most influential thinkers shaped this movement:

Gordon Allport (1930s): The Pioneer Who Defined Personality Traits
Allport was among the first psychologists to systematically study traits. He believed that personality is made up of real, observable characteristics that guide behaviour across situations.
He categorised traits into three levels:
- Cardinal Traits– Dominant qualities that define a person’s life (e.g., Mother Teresa’s compassion). Few people have these, but when they do, such traits are central to their identity.
- Central Traits– Core qualities that shape daily behaviour (e.g., honesty, sociability, optimism). These are what we usually mention when describing someone.
- Secondary Traits– More specific preferences or attitudes that appear in certain situations (e.g., nervousness before public speaking, or love for particular music).
Allport’s approach highlighted that personality is individualised; not everyone can be reduced to fixed categories.
Raymond Cattell (1940s): The Scientist of Traits
Building on Allport’s pioneering work, Raymond Cattell brought a more scientific approach to the study of personality. He applied factor analysis, a statistical method, to Allport’s long list of traits, identifying patterns and clusters. This led him to propose 16 key personality dimensions, known as the 16 Personality Factors (16PF), which together capture the essence of human personality.
Cattell also explored how traits develop through both biology and experience. He distinguished between two key types of traits:
- Constitutional traits – Biologically based and largely determined by genetics, these traits are stable and influence how a person naturally reacts to the world.
Example: Someone may have a naturally high energy level or a tendency toward anxiety due to inherited genetic factors. - Environmental-mould traits – Shaped by life experiences, social interactions, and cultural influences, these traits reflect how the environment moulds behaviour over time.
Example: A child in a competitive school may develop a strong drive for achievement, or someone raised in a supportive family may become more empathetic.
Beyond this, Cattell differentiated between two levels of traits that describe personality:
- Surface Traits – Observable behaviours that appear together but may not have a single underlying cause.
Example: Being talkative, outgoing, and energetic often cluster together; these are surface traits. - Source Traits – The deeper, underlying traits that shape surface traits. They represent the core structure of personality.
Example: The source trait behind being talkative and energetic could be Extraversion.
Cattell’s 16PF included traits such as Warmth, Reasoning, Emotional Stability, Dominance, Liveliness, Rule-Consciousness, Social Boldness, Sensitivity, Vigilance, Abstractedness, Privateness, Apprehension, Openness to Change, Self-Reliance, Perfectionism, and Tension. Together, they offered a comprehensive framework for understanding human personality.
Hans Eysenck (1950s): The Dimensional Model
Hans Eysenck believed that most personality traits could be summarised into a few broad dimensions rooted in biology.
Using factor analysis and experimental research, he proposed three super-traits:
- Extraversion (E) – The degree to which a person is outgoing, energetic, and social versus quiet and reserved.
- Linked to levels of brain arousal in the cerebral cortex.
- Neuroticism (N) – Emotional stability versus instability; how easily a person experiences anxiety, mood swings, or worry.
- Associated with activity in the autonomic nervous system.
- Psychoticism (P) – A later addition, reflecting aggressiveness, creativity, and nonconformity.
- Higher levels were thought to relate to risk-taking and unconventional behaviour.
Eysenck’s model emphasised the biological bases of personality, suggesting that our temperament has genetic roots.
His theory later influenced the development of the Big Five Personality Model, which refined and expanded these dimensions into five universally accepted factors.

In Essence
The trait approach turned personality study into a science of patterns.
- Allport gave personality a human touch,
- Cattell gave it structure through data, and
- Eysenck gave it a biological grounding.
Together, their work laid the foundation for modern personality assessment from psychometric tests to contemporary models like the Big Five (OCEAN).
