Before listing ethical issues, it helps to know where research ethics come from — and why they became necessary. Modern ethical rules did not appear randomly; they were created after World War II, when horrific Nazi medical experiments revealed the need to protect human dignity in research. This led to the Nuremberg Code (1947), which later shaped:

- The Belmont Report (Respect for Persons, Beneficence, Justice)
- Declaration of Helsinki
- Institutional Review Boards (IRBs)
These frameworks now ensure psychological research is safe, responsible, and non-exploitative.

Key Ethical Issues in Research (with examples)
Below are the core ethical principles every student, researcher, or reader should understand, each explained simply with a small case example.
1. Informed Consent
Participants must clearly understand:
- What the study is about
- Procedures and time commitment
- Any risks
- Their right to withdraw freely
Example: A researcher wants to measure stress levels using a mild noise blast. They explain everything, ask participants if they’re comfortable, and allow them to quit any time.
2. Voluntary Participation (No Coercion)
Participation must always be truly voluntary — people should join because they choose to, not because they feel pressured, obligated, or worried about consequences. Even subtle pressure (teachers, authority figures, peer pressure, or overly generous rewards) counts as coercion.
Why it matters: Real consent only exists when people feel free to say “no.” This protects autonomy and follows APA’s rules on informed consent and avoiding undue influence.
Example: A teacher telling students “everyone is expected to take part in this study” makes them feel they can’t refuse — this is coercion and violates voluntary participation.
3. Protection From Harm (Beneficence & Non-maleficence)
Researchers must minimise physical, psychological, social, or financial harm.
Example: Participants asked to recall traumatic events must be provided mental health support and be allowed to skip distressing questions.
4. Confidentiality, Anonymity & Data Privacy
Personal information must be kept secure, anonymous (if promised), and never shared without permission.
Example: A survey on depression stores data with ID codes instead of names, and encrypted digital files.
5. Deception (Only If Necessary)
Deception is allowed only if:
- It is scientifically essential
- It does not harm participants
- It is approved by an ethics board
- Participants are fully debriefed afterwards
Example: In a conformity experiment, the true purpose is hidden temporarily, but participants are fully debriefed afterward.
6. Mandatory Debriefing
After the study — especially if deception was used — researchers must explain the true purpose, reveal what was hidden and why, and make sure participants leave feeling informed, respected, and emotionally okay.
Why it matters: Debriefing repairs trust, reduces confusion or distress, and is required under APA guidelines whenever deception or potential harm is involved.
Example: If participants were misled into believing they were giving real electric shocks (like Milgram’s study), the researcher must fully debrief them afterward to explain the truth and reduce any guilt or anxiety.
7. Fair Participant Selection & Special Protection for Vulnerable Groups
Participants must be selected fairly, without exploiting:
- children
- mentally ill individuals
- prisoners
- marginalized communities
Example: A memory study that only involves prisoners without a scientific justification is unethical — the burden is unfair.
8. Integrity, Honesty & Transparency in Reporting
Researchers must not:
- fabricate/falsify data
- manipulate results
- hide limitations
- plagiarize
Example: A researcher who deletes “inconvenient” data points to improve significance violates ethical norms.
9. Ethical Review & Oversight (IRB Approval)
Every study involving human participants must be reviewed by an ethics committee.
Example: A study using mild stress induction cannot begin until the IRB approves the risk–benefit ratio.

Milgram’s Obedience Study (1963)
In Milgram’s experiment, people were told they were helping with a study on learning. They had to give “electric shocks” to another person whenever he made a mistake. The shocks weren’t real, but the volunteers didn’t know that.
As the shocks supposedly got stronger, the man screamed, begged to stop, and eventually went silent. Whenever the volunteer hesitated, the researcher gently pushed them: “Please continue… the experiment requires it.”
Shockingly, most people kept going all the way to the highest voltage simply because an authority figure told them to. The study showed how easily ordinary people can obey orders even when they think someone is being hurt.
